Quique Setién has been unveiled as Barcelona’s new head coach at a public ceremony in Camp Nou Tuesday afternoon.
The 61-year-old was appointed early Tuesday morning after the sack of Ernesto Valverde who was in his third year as Blaugrana coach.
He said: “My objective is to win everything I can win. There is no other path but to improve every year and achieve the maximum amount of trophies possible, as well as playing well.
“The best route to victory is playing well. It’s important to associate that.”
The former Real Betis coach signed a two-year contract until the summer of 2022 which did not seem surprising judging by the answers given by club president Josep Maria Bartomeu when asked about Xavi.
“Quique Setien has a contract until 2022,” he said. “But as there are elections in 2021, there’s a clause in which the [new] president can make a change.”
Bartomeu however, thanked former coach Ernesto Valverde:”I want to thank Valverde for his leaving letter,” he said. “That’s how he is. A person with great values. We are friends. We are formed a great relationship, he is someone who left his mark.”
